A Historical Site (Middle School)

Hi everyone, welcome back to the Amazing blog of Florida!!

Today I want to take you along and bring you to another historical site in my small town. One that I spent three years of my life at. Callahan Middle School. I attended the visit along with my Boyfriend, Brooks on November twelfth at around five in the afternoon. During our visit, we were there for around ten minutes just because it had been a part of both our lives.

Before segregation was banned, the middle school in my town was the all black high school. It states in Pine Forest Community High School (The American South), “ Starting in 1951, the black schools in Hilliard, Bryceville, and Kings Ferry were consolidated with the black school in Callahan to form Pine Forest High School.” During the time of operation, (seventeen years) it was open to grades 1-12. In 1968, is when all schools in Nassau integrated and Pine Forest High School became Callahan Middle school. All buildings have been renovated but the only true building that still stands is in the gym at the school.

The reason that the middle school is so special to our town is because not only does it show history but it's unique in its own way. While every school in our small town represents the colors of red and gold, with the Warrior as their mascot. ( Callahan Elementary, Callahan Intermediate, and West Nassau High School) Callahan Middle School represents the colors of Blue and gold, with a Rambler car as their mascot. The school stays true to its roots and continues to hold its history through it everyday.

Throwback to when I cheered for Callahan Middle School featuring my cousin Jayden:

  1. Kaylee,
You really got creative with this site visit! I would've never thought to visit a school. But I love that you did! What a cool piece of history. I often think of Jacksonville and the surrounding areas as sort of a boring place because of the lack of attractions, but taking this course has really opened my eyes and changed my perception on that. There is so much history all around us! I like how you included pictures of yourself so I can put a face on your name. Also, I love that you included a throwback picture of yourself! It's so cool that you went to a school that's so full of history. Great job on this post!

  2. “Hi, Kaylee! I also attended Callahan Middle School and I found the information you found on it very interesting. I knew that it used to be the all black high school and that it had changed but I love how you brought in the other schools also! Amazing job!”
